The Waitomo Caves Hotel is a
hotel in the grand style located in the hills close to the centre of the
village, with a fine view over the village and within easy reach of all
activities in the area. The emphasis of the hotel is on comfort and
character.
The hotel was built in 1910 after
the glowworm caves were opened to tourists. Initially it was a Government
hostel, and consisted of what is now the "wooden wing". By the 1920s it
was too small for the growing number of visitors, and was expanded in 1928
with the addition of the "concrete wing". As well as 19 top rooms, the
hotel offers budget
accommodation with 18 economy rooms and backpacker accomodation in one
wing.
The Fred Mace licensed
restaurant provides excellent cuisine with a wide range of New Zealand
and other wines from the cellar. Breakfasts are available in the Garden
Room. The Caver's Breakfast will prepare you for anything.
